Are you looking for reasons to be your own boss?  Has the idea of starting your own business crossed your mind?  Maybe you have a hobby that brings in some extra cash and you want to scale up your business plan.  Or perhaps you have an idea for a product or service that can create a full time income for you and your family.

Either way, there are numerous reasons to start your business.  Those who take their education and professional experience to branch off into their own operation will tell you, it wasn’t easy, but it was worth it and it comes with many perks.

Let’s discuss just a few of the great reasons to be your own boss.  If this list doesn’t encourage you to take the first step of starting your own business, then I’ll eat my hat (or not).

1. More Job Security

It’s no secret that the economy is…well, let’s say not in good shape.  There are far more job seekers out there than jobs.  And even though we hear that the numbers are improving, the unemployment lines say otherwise.  When you own your own business, the chances of you being laid off are slim.  You are at the top of the food chain and depending on the size of your operation, your success will reply on your own effort.

2. Accomplishment

There’s nothing like the feeling of owning your own business.  You can take pride in knowing that something you’ve started and maintain is sustaining your lifestyle.  Creating your own business when. Additionally, you can sleep better at night knowing that you’re creative dream is a reality.  You are the boss.  You are the king or queen of your kingdom.  This is one of the best reasons to be your own boss.

3. Freedom

Freedom is perhaps the very best reason of all to start your own business.  Yes, it’ll be hectic when you first get started, but once you get to a good place and have a steady stride, you will control your time.  If you work best in the morning, the afternoon or even if you’re a night owl, guess what?  Being your own boss allows you to decide when you work.  Granted this will depend heavily on the type business you’ll run.  But the perk is still there.  You’re not working yourself to the bone for someone else.


4. More Income

When you are your own boss, you get the biggest piece of the pie.  As a business owner, you will pay bills, you will balance expenses and at the end of the day, you will pay yourself.  Let me repeat that for you.  You will pay yourself!  How would you feel about writing yourself a check?  For many business owners the most appealing part of entrepreneurship is getting a bigger paycheck.

5. Choosing Your Location

Why would the location be important, you wonder.  Ask all the commuters who sit in rush hour traffic or spend hours riding the train.  When you work you are the boss, you not only decide when you’re going to work, but you also decide where you’re going to work.  Maybe it’s important to stay close to home because of small children or elderly parents.  Maybe your business model can be maintained from a home office.  No matter what your reasons might be for choosing one location over another, the choice is still yours.

6. Decide Who You Work With

If your current boss has taken a page from the Bill Lumbergh manager playbook, then you probably have pent up aggravation.  If you’re used to dealing with dishonest, manipulative, incompetent, power hunger co-workers then you’re a great candidate for business ownership.  When you call the shots, you decide who you will and will not work with.  This perk alone is worth your time and effort.

7. Help Other People

Anyone who is in a hiring or service oriented business will tell you how rewarding it is to help other people.  Not only is the gratitude rewarding, but knowing that you’ve made a positive contribution to the life of another human being.  Whether you’re the warm fuzzy feeling type or not, you will be once you get there.
